Having the right equipment can be the difference between coming home with dinner or bare hands. Thus, our Ascend FS12T fishing kayak got us having mixed opinions compared to other specialized fishing kayaks we tested.
Available from a range of equipment, Ascend specializes in a variety of hard plastic craft from both the sit-in and sit-on variety. The most popular of Ascend’s sit-on-top designs is the 12-foot fishing model.
Pros:
- Adjustable seat that can be raised, lowered, or removed
- Lots of deck space to sit and throw
Cons:
- Not as stable as some top fishing kayaks
- One of the heaviest fishing kayaks
Things you should consider before buying an Ascend FS12T fishing kayak
Although individual kayaks can be 17 feet or more in length, finding storage space for even a 12-foot ship can be difficult. Make sure you have space in your home, garage, or warehouse to protect your new investment from rain and other weather hazards. Being a heavier boat, it is also important to make sure you have a safe and reliable way to transport it to the water. For most, this will be done with the car, which will probably require a shelf or trailer to move safely.
Specifications:
- Length: 12 feet
- Width: 31 inches
- Weight: 77 pounds
- Load capacity: 350 pounds
Material
The 12-foot Ascend fishing kayak is made of a durable plastic known as polyethylene. While plastic is heavier than other materials that are also used in kayak construction, such as fiberglass, this one is much more durable. It can cope with any drops or misfortunes you have by transporting it to the water.
Speed
The weight of the boat makes it a full kayak. While the hull is simpler than some fishing kayaks, it is overtaken by most in its class. This may not matter if you are alone, but if you are traveling with a group, you should be prepared to paddle hard to keep up. It can also make it difficult to cover longer distances, and it’s important to keep in mind that it won’t get you out of trouble as quickly.
Maneuverability
One of our main complaints is the lack of a rudder. Although it is possible to install a rudder, it requires quite a lot of work from the owner and some technical knowledge.
Comfort
Ascend thought of their chairs. There are rarely uncomfortable kayak seats and we are happy to say that it is not one of them. With several adjustable settings and the ability to be raised, lowered, or removed, there are plenty of ways to feel comfortable. More so, foot braces are also fully customizable to help you find the perfect fit.
Stability and tracking
For calm rowing, the boat follows decently. Although we must mention once again the lack of a rudder that would help a lot in the pursuit. This is especially true for beginners learning how to manage a kayak for the first time. If you are just starting out, we would keep this model in calm water until you feel comfortable. Stability is also somewhat controversial. A non-stick platform is installed on the casting deck to provide a better base for those who want to stand and throw.
Durability
Any kayak will sting and start to show wear if you treat it badly. Go carefully to the beaches whenever possible and be careful of sunken rocks and other dangers. On sandy or rocky beaches, it may be possible to pull it into the water instead of enlisting a second person to carry it. However, we would suggest that you find a transport partner whenever possible to keep the boat in the best possible condition.
Portability
For a solo fishing kayak, this is one of the heaviest. If you sign up for 77 pounds, it’s pretty hard to try transporting it on your own. This weight can be difficult to lift or lower by yourself from a vehicle. Chances are you will have to ask for someone else’s help to get on the water.
Features and accessories
What differentiates fishing kayaks is the built-in accessories that make fishing easier than in a traditional one. This Ascend model comes with a pair of paddle holders that will keep them out of the way and secure while fishing.
To compensate for the heavier weight of the boat, the handles were installed in the bow and stern to help transport in tandem. Six scoops are built into the hull to help drain the water that finds its way into the cabin. A nice plus is that plugs are included, a feature that some companies omit. This makes the boat more stable in rough water and keeps the water from entering the boat.
Ease of fishing
While the wide-beam and “tunnel arch” design is meant to help with stability, it is important to note that some paddlers have expressed disappointment with the stability of this model when standing or sitting. It could be inexperienced paddlers or just a bad day, but it should be mentioned.
There is plenty of storage space in this kayak. Both the bow and stern are designed as outdoor storage compartments, complete with cords to secure your equipment. A waterproof hatch with a spacious 10.91 “x 14.84” opening can be found in the middle of the ship next to the seat.
Two-rod holders are built into the hull to keep your poles secure as you transit to and from your favorite fishing spot. You will also find a pair of accessory mounting rails (one on each side) that can be fitted for a variety of custom components.
Value
The biggest appeal to Ascend 12T Fishing Kayak for consumers is the price. It is significantly cheaper than many of its competitors. We recommend you should check out basspro.com for the best price offers.
