STAR Paragon Inflatable Kayak Review

Inflatable Kayaks

The STAR Paragon inflatable kayak definitely impressed us. This kayak follows well and is ideal for rowing in flat water. If you haven’t heard of STAR inflatables before, they are a subsidiary of NRS, which is an excellent paddle sports company, existing since 1972. Paragon inflatable kayaks come in three different sizes. In this particular review, we will talk about the smaller solo model, but many of the features and points relate to all three models.

One of the things that make Paragon stand out is the bow and stern keel inserts, which really help keep it moving smoothly forward and sliding straight. The 36 “width of this kayak has a very nice size because it is wide enough to give excellent stability even to new oarsmen.

Paragon offers a very comfortable ride and, although it is not the fastest in the flat water category, the smooth glide and easy maneuverability make it feel very nice when rowing. When it comes to its size, it is heavier than we expected, but it is solid and therefore it also feels solid in water. Also, with heavier weights, there is less chance of being so to speak, blown in the wind.

STAR Paragon tends to stay in the water even in harsher conditions. This kayak is not very large but for those who are at most 6’2 ”tall it is suitable. If you need more legroom, take a look at the XL or tandem Paragon.

IMPORTANT FEATURES

Here are some great features you need to know about this kayak:

D RINGS

There are 10 stainless steel D-rings that can be used to secure the seat and equipment. The D-rings are well-positioned and protect your gear or a small cooler in the back.

Handles

The two reinforced transport handles of this kayak, one at the bow and one at the stern, make it easier for two people to carry or grab.

RIGID FLOOR WITH HIGH PRESSURE

We are seeing more and more floors with high-pressure seam, when it comes to better inflatable kayaks. It is a really important feature because it offers more rigidity and better performance. We notice a huge difference in the level of performance of inflatable kayaks that have a high-pressure floor than those that do not.

BUNGEE DECK

The bungee deck on both the front and the back cover is an excellent space for storing dry bags that can get wet and additional equipment for longer adventures. You can easily fit a few dry bags under them or even camping gear if you go on overnight trips.

KEEL INSERTS

Without these rigid keel inserts, this would definitely be a completely different review. They make a huge difference in the overall performance of the STAR Paragon model and even help this kayak cut the water with less resistance.

Inflatable kayaks are not known for perfect tracking by any means, but there are some IKs that contain rigid keels like these to help them slide and track. They work and are an excellent feature. The only disadvantage of rigid keel inserts is that they make a larger package when the kayak is deflated, wrapped, and stored. However, it is totally worth the extra weight and volume for better performance.

LEAFIELD VALVE C7

NRS uses the Leafield C7 valve for all inflatable kayaks and inflatable SUPs. It is good quality and easy to use.

CURVED TOURING FIN

The curved touring fin of this kayak slides easily into the fin box and easily clips into place. You definitely want to use your fins and it helps you a lot in tracking.

HIGH BACK SEAT

We have mixed feelings about the chair. It is easy to install and it can be attached to the side D rings. It has a high back and is quite comfortable. You can pull the straps to make your back more or less stiff. It also includes a zippered bag and a cup holder on the back of the chair.

In our opinion, it could use a little extra lining and support. If you want to change your seat on the road, you can do so easily. You just need another seat to secure the D-rings. Our favorite is the one that comes with the Sea Eagle kayak.

FOOT BRACES

It is only in the last few years that we have started to see inflatable kayaks that include foot braces. As you can imagine, they clearly make a huge difference.

With your legs outstretched, you can paddle more efficiently, with more power and less pressure on your back. We definitely like that they are included in the package. They can be adjusted according to your height.

WHAT’S IN THE BOX

  • Kayaking HULL
  • 1 Removable seat with high back
  • Leg straps
  • Manual pump
  • Hand baggage
  • 1 removable fin for all types of waters

SETUP

With three inflatable air chambers (one on the floor and one on each side), it will take about 7-10 minutes to inflate depending on the pumping speed. The double-acting manual pump allows you to inflate the floor to higher air pressure and generally simplifies pumping. Once inflated, make sure you secure the fin and attach the seat. After use, allow a little extra time to dry it properly. Pull the floor and throw away any water that has gathered there.

LOADING CAPACITY

The NRS states that the load capacity of STAR Paragon is 275 lbs. We’d say it’s a conservative number. This is a well-made kayak and can probably hold a better amount. However, for optimal performance, 275 lbs. or less is recommended.

CONSTRUCTION

The 1000 PVC material is what you want to see in a durable inflatable kayak. The material is strong and when it is swollen you can tell the difference between it and those with cheaper construction.

WARRANTY

We were very happy to see that NRS offers a solid 3-year warranty with STAR inflatable kayaks. It basically covers everything except normal wear and tear.

COMPLAINTS?

We only have a few complaints …

For one it is a little too heavy than we would like for its size. The heavier weight of this kayak means that it takes a little more effort to paddle and carry it. However, it also keeps the kayak very solid in the water, which is nice when dealing with wind. The seat could also use a little extra lining and more back support.

BOTTOM LINE

In conclusion, STAR Paragon offers a very beautiful and comfortable kayaking ride. It is a solid kayak that can be easily transported to the water in the trunk of the car. No roof racks are required.

It’s not very spacious, but it has enough space for a rider with a height of up to 6’2 “and a few bags of equipment. You get a little wet when you ride Paragon, but this is not uncommon with open deck inflatable kayaks. With a 3-year warranty, you are covered. For the price, it’s definitely a good buy.
